Brahmanbaria: One of the Ancient and Prosperous Cities of Eastern Bangladesh

Brahmanbaria is not just a district town; it is a major commercial and cultural hub in the eastern region of Bangladesh. After Cumilla, it is the second-largest city in Eastern Bangladesh. Situated on the banks of the Titas River, the city is well-known across the country for its ancient history, economic importance, and illustrious sons.

Etymology

There are various theories regarding the origin of the name “Brahmanbaria.” According to folklore, during the reign of the Sena dynasty, there was a shortage of Brahmins to perform religious rituals in this region. King Lakshman Sena then brought several Brahmin families from ‘Kanyakubja’ (of the then Adishur). The area where they established their homes (Bari) eventually became known as “Brahmanbaria.”

History and Tradition

Brahmanbaria is one of the oldest municipalities in Bangladesh, established in 1868. It has been administratively significant since the British era. It was granted the status of a district headquarters in 1984.

  • Contribution to the Liberation War: The role of Brahmanbaria in the Great Liberation War of 1971 was unforgettable. The Pakistani army anticipated a main Indian thrust through the Akhaura-Brahmanbaria axis and built strong defenses here. On December 16, following the historic surrender of the Pakistani forces, the region was liberated.

Geography and Climate

Brahmanbaria is located in the east-central region of Bangladesh. The Meghna River flows to its west, while the Titas River flows right beside the city.
